Literature Text

I want to be your defender.
I want to be your guardian.
I long to keep all the bad away from you
And let your goodly light shine through.
There is so much I see in you
That you may never see –
All things good and just are in you.
You bring out my good
And dismember my bad.

I want to defend your lovely eyes.
At first glance they are a pedestrian brown
But to me they are beacons of vibrance.
They are at once a perfect mirror and a cloudy window.
They are intricate and lovely.
Your eyes reveal to me the brilliant future I have with you
And they simultaneously seem on the verge of bursting
With a thousand tears for the brighter futures you could have had
Were it not for the bad in this world.

I want to defend your magic mind.
Often you play-act the fool and pretend you're less
Than you really are, but I know better.
Your mind is powerful and penetrating
And your beautiful thoughts are like a light in the fog.
In such a short time you have already become
A paragon of inspiration, a veritable wellspring of ideas.
Surely you think you're substandard intellectually,
But you're absolutely completely totally wrong.

I want to defend your charred soul
With its frayed wings and tattered robes.
You have survived the fires of Hell
And your innumerable scars prove your journey.
If Time allowed us, I would gladly swim Styx in your stead.
Your soul's mere existence is a testament to its strength!
A weaker soul would have withered under such brutality
But yours is stronger than ever and still gaining.
You are near your new set of wings and fresh robes.

There are those who would hurt you and beat you down
And those who would distract you from the truth.
I take on the role of Defender and I will force them back.
Your soul still needs time to heal, and only you can heal it –
But I will keep new wounds away.
You are diamonds on velvet, a gem amongst the granite,
But your soul's eyes aren't seeing properly yet.
Until they've healed,
Let me be your eyes.
A poem written a long time ago...to the girl who just left me.
